Thank You for a Wonderful Day

Three days after the event and I nearly feel fully recovered. BarCamp Des Moines was amazing. We had nearly 80 people sign in and 24 different sessions throughout the day. Thank you to all who stopped by and helped make BarCamp such a success!

I would also like to thank our sponsors. Without their support this event would have never been possible! Their contributions helped us secure the location, food and all of the little things needed to provide the open, collaborative environment. So a great deal of thanks goes to:

Source Allies, Inc.
Wells Fargo Technology Information Group
Big Creek Software, LLC
Impromptu Studio
Internet Solver
Lullabot
DMACC
Alliance Technologies
Iowa Student Loan
Paragon IT Professionals
Robert Half Technologies
Iowa Department of Economic Development

And special thanks to the many others who contributed to the success of BarCamp Des Moines by donating their time and services including:

Aaron Webb
Matt Vincent

BarCamp Des Moines Tomorrow!

Tomorrow, August 23rd we will open the doors for BarCamp Des Moines! We nearly have all of the pieces put together and all we are really missing is you.

Come join us tomorrow for the 2nd Annual BarCamp Des Moines. The doors will open at 8:30 for registration and networking and activities will continue throughout the day until 10:00pm. Details including location and schedule can be found on our events page here.

Preparing Your Session

BarCamp Des Moines is now less than a week away (its this Saturday!) and if you are planning on holding a session that doesn’t provide much time to put everthing together. And because I have had a number of questions here are some ideas for those who haven’t had time to put something together yet but still want to come with a topic.

One, identify your interests. There will be a diversity of topics presented at BarCamp so know your priorities because each participant will help shape he session agenda for the day.

Two, know what type of format you feel most comfortable speaking/participating in. The doors are open to a variety of possibilities for each session. We welcome panels, decks, demos and other formats so do something the fits your style

Three, come with multiple ideas and sessions planned. With the number of people showing up there is no guarantee you will get to present however if you have a diversity of topics it will greatly increase you chances

Lastly, give yourself some time to practice and walk through your session. Questions will be flying, the pace of the day will be intense so help yourself out by preparing and practicing your session in advance.

BarCamp Omaha Kicks Off Tomorrow

The crew just a skip away to the west will be kicking off BarCamp Omaha tomorrow. They have been hard at work planning the event and look to have an exciting three day schedule planned! If you are looking for something to do this weekend think about making the short drive to Omaha and bring back the ideas and energy to BarCamp Des Moines on August 23rd.

A few things we still need

Through the planning and discussion around BarCamp Des Moines many have asked what they can do to help make this a successful event and with just about two weeks there are number of items we are still tracking down. Check out our list and if you see something on there feel free to run with it and comment on the blog to let us know.

1. Projectors - we are looking for 3 additional projectors for the event. Two will be for session areas, one for back up and the last to be used to display general information throughout the day

2. Bloggers and Podcasters - we want to get the word out before, during and after the event. If you are a blogger or podcaster help us spread the word to generate interest in this and future BarCamps.

3. BarCamp Des Moines graphics - we are looking for someone to volunteer their time and skill to create a beautiful design to use for our print communications and website.

4. Presentations and Demos - the sessions are user generated so come to BarCamp Des Moines prepared with a presentation or demo to share. Our agenda is flexible and we will have opportunities for 30 to 60 minute sessions.

What is BarCamp?

You heard about it from a friend. You saw it in passing on Twitter. Your group mailing list is promoting it. What is this BarCamp thing?

BarCamp is the ultimate geek “unconference”. It is a gathering of people learning from and sharing with the other participants. BarCamps, although loosely structured, usually follow a set of rules of format and participation. The event is designed to promote as much interaction and participation as possible.

Wikipedia, the BarCamp wiki, YouTube, and others have a large amount of information to help you familiarize yourself with the event and format. What are you excited about? Join us and share!

Hello BarCamp Des Moines!

We are well into planning and organizing BarCamp Des Moines 2008. This blog will be used to post the latest developments in planning and to aggregate the information coming out of the event that day.

Leave a comment if you have any helpful planning information or would like to assist in some way. We are looking for sponsors so if you or anyone you know would like to help in making this a reality let us know. More details on sponsorship will be posted later.

Of course a successful event means as many participants as possible! Let us know either on upcoming or Facebook.
